WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH…

I have to admit that I was struggling to write this section of the RL&A blog – intended to go out before the holidays – but got caught up in all the end of the year things that make running a small business about as much fun as having your teeth drilled – and never actually got around to finishing. And then there was this small issue of the state of the economy – and the world, for that matter – that put a damper on the holiday season, altogether.

But rather than start the New Year with the prevailing doom-and-gloom attitude, I prefer to see the end of 2008 and beginning of 2009 as a positive thing that will lead to more positive things…and so on as the year progresses. Public relations – unlike advertising and many other marketing options – is one of the more cost-effective ways to spend marketing dollars, so I am cautiously hopeful that RL&A will continue to grow and work with many new and existing clients in 2009 and beyond. Now more than ever, companies need to continue to market themselves to their various constituents – not stop and fall off the radar altogether. And while not meaning to sound self-serving – many people will back me up on this — public relations is a smart way to get more mileage out of reduced marketing dollars, since PR – when done right — typically delivers a better CPM and ROI. PR, now with the added tool of social media, is one of the best spends you will make in the coming year – especially with a firm like Robin Leedy & Associates (just had to slip that in!).

So, with that said, all of us at RL&A wish all of our friends and colleagues, here in the U.S. and abroad, a heartfelt, happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. And don’t worry so much – I predict good times ahead for us all!

THINK PINK WITH ROBIN LEEDY & ASSOCIATES

As a public relations firm that specializes in healthcare and particularly women’s health and personal care issues, RL&A decided to give back to our community and participate in the American Cancer Society’s 15th Annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K Walk, which took place Sunday, October 19th, at Manhattanville College here in Westchester County.

Breast cancer affects all of us in some way, even touching the lives of family members of some of us here at RL&A in the past few years. This was a chance for us to recognize and support breast cancer survivors and help the American Cancer Society make strides toward eliminating the disease and achieve the goal of never having to hear that you or a loved one has breast cancer.

Together with everyone else that came out for the day, more than $1.6 million was raised to fight this deadly disease and the RL&A team was more than happy to play our part.

The Making Strides walk covered a five mile course that ended with what seemed like the hill to end all hills. The walk started at Manhanttanville and wound through SUNY Purchase before it came full circle and ended back at Manhattanville College. Men, women and children of all ages participated.

The day was gorgeous, not too hot, not too cold, but just right, and everyone enjoyed spending the time together and getting some exercise all while helping out this great cause.

The best part of the day was that everyone on the RL&A team — from our most junior member up — all finished the entire 5K race!

If you want a quick daily fact, look no further than the “Snapshot” in the Life section of USA Today, which features a variety of different statistics about our everyday lives, habits and thoughts. With a readership of more than six million nationwide, getting one client into that Snapshot section would be awesome, but in the past two weeks, we have gotten TWO different clients included. The most recent one was with stats from the survey we conducted for Sambucol Black Elderberry on the use of multivitamins, and, prior to that, for Softlips Lip Conditioners on kissing. Check out the new Clients in the News section to see these clips.

We were thrilled when the Wall Street Journal, one of the largest daily newspapers with a readership of 5.4 million, ran a story on the benefits of probiotics and included our client Florastor (Biocodex) as the brand in the Saccharomyces boulardii strain category, citing the studies/science we had supplied the writer.

Sniffles and sneezing are a part of life this time of year and will only increase as we get more into the dead of winter. It is important to know what works best to combat these symptoms, and one of our clients, Cold-EEZE Zinc Lozenges, is recommended in this RL&A placement in the November issue of Woman’s World (readership 5.2 million) as one of four cold fighting remedies that even doctors themselves use.

Weird but True

Friday, January 9th, 2009

The end of the year brings a lot of things, such as holidays, time together with family and of course, colder weather in much of the country. The colder weather also means that cold and flu season is in full force (actually January and February are typically peak flu months).

So in this month’s edition of Weird but True we decided to highlight a recent survey we had Harris Interactive conduct for our client Sambucol Black Elderberry dietary supplement that had to do with winter-time illness.

If you have not been sick recently you should consider yourself lucky, because just less than one quarter of adult respondents (23%) surveyed reported not getting sick over the past five years. Some viruses can be more severe than others and the symptoms can range from person to person, but 32% of those who responded said the last time they got the flu they were sick for more than a week. That is a lot of lost productivity! Furthermore, a quarter of adults reported being so sick they could hardly function and one out of 10 reported being so sick they thought they might die!

Flu shots might help, but more than half of adults (56%) say they don’t get them. The list of reasons for not getting one varied from those who don’t believe they work (23%), to flu shots are just for the elderly or immune-compromised (23%), to those who don’t have health insurance (11%), are afraid of needles (10 %), don’t have time (9%) and everything in between.

While a quarter of adults say health is a top priority in their lives and one out of 10 adults constantly worries about their health, many are not doing well when it comes to taking care. Americans are saying they don’t get enough exercise (50%), don’t get enough sleep (40%), are stressed out (38%), feel tired frequently (33%), often feel run down (25%) and get sick frequently (4%).

So what are people using as a defense against winter illness? The Sambucol survey found that more and more adults are turning to natural products to help defend their body. In fact, we found that 80% reported using some form of a natural product in the past 12 months for their potential health benefits. The most popular was a multi-vitamin with more than half of adults (56%) reporting taking them, followed by vitamin C (43%) and green tea (35%). Some berries, including cranberries/cranberry juice (33%) and blueberries (22%) are used for their health benefits, while just 2% report using elderberry (a good reason to start a PR campaign!). Now go take your supplements!

is recommended as a great way to help ease gut pain after taking an antibiotic. Our expert Dr. Patricia Raymond says antibiotics can wreak havoc on your insides and is similar to “having an atomic bomb exploding in the colon.”

With the holiday parties that were sure to be taking place throughout November/December, we were thrilled when our client ROHTO Eye Drops was recommended by Harper’s Bazaar (readership 2.8 million) as a great way to get the red out of eyes and reduce the appearance of a hangover the next morning.

TWITTER, PART TWO

In our last blog, we introduced you to Twitter, one of the more popular social media tools that’s growing by leaps and bounds. As you may recall, we discussed the basics of Twitter, such as opening an account and choosing other users to follow.

In this issue we will explore how Twitter can be used for business. We will also share some examples of companies successfully using the service in a variety of ways.

One of the differences between Twitter and an instant messaging system is the ability to search and “listen” to see what is being said in the online world. Twitter allows you to search every single message by keyword to “hear” anything that is being said about you or your company.

As with the case with most social media tools, this process of “listening” is the first and most important step. Once you listen to see what is being said and how it is being said, you can then start to decide whether it makes sense to get involved and if it does, then how to go about getting involved and connect with your audience.

Many large companies have already taken the leap and now use Twitter to update people quickly on changes in the business and some have even used it to try to reach out to customers in order to improve their customer service. Cable giant Comcast might be the most notorious example of using Twitter for this purpose when they responded to an individual who tweeted about problems he was having with customer service. Through the use of Twitter they not only responded to his problem but also helped him solve it. He later sent a tweet about how responsive the company was in using this new media and the story got picked up and resulted in some great press for the company.

Many media outlets are also sending twits of breaking news, and more and more reporters are using twitter as well to solicit pitches and to keep their followers abreast of what they are working on.

Twitter works by connecting people but another advantage is that you have control over who you connect with. If you find someone who is interesting and who tends to have good advice or if there is a media outlet you like to read, you can decide to become a follower. Likewise, when people become interested in you or what you are saying, they follow you. When you send out a message it does not go out to the general public but rather it goes to those who are following you. There is also a way to send a message to only one of your followers. This is called direct messaging.

The bottom line is that Twitter helps businesses and individuals develop relationships and network with each other in a very personal way. Twitter helps you form new relationships and allows you/your company to stay in touch more quickly and more efficiently with your existing constituents.
